I am a Behaviour Analyst (UKBA(cert), BCBA and IBA) with over 25 years’ experience working across a variety of settings. I am passionate about applying behaviour analysis with mindful compassion to help people and organisations create meaningful, lasting change.
I specialise in working alongside people who may at times show behaviours of concern and who have complex and diverse support needs, including intellectual disability, autism, mental health needs, brain injury and dementia.
I work in partnership with people, their families, teams and supporters to understand what matters to the person and how best to support them to live a good life. My work is grounded in the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework, an approach that brings together human rights, evidence-informed practice and a focus on improving quality of life.
Outside of work I enjoy walking my two rescue dogs, running, yoga and travel.
I believe that everyone should experience the full richness of a good life.
Good support begins with thoughtful people, capable organisations and a shared commitment to the people we support.
My role is to create the conditions for thoughtful practice - helping individuals and organisations think more clearly, more compassionately and more systematically.
Acting with kindness and putting the person’s rights and needs above all else
Building relationships and creating spaces for open, honest communication
Creating environments where people and teams thrive
I am a member of the Restraint Reduction Network.
I commit to continue to include restraint reduction as an ongoing priority within my supervision of other Behaviour Analysts and PBS Leads, in my work supporting organisations and in my direct work with people, their families and carers. I will ensure that those I work with have a good understanding of the PBS framework, particularly the values which underpin it, the reasons why behaviour occurs and how to work proactively to create environments which are capable of meeting people's needs and supporting a good quality of life.
I will provide training, consultancy and supervision to others to develop their knowledge and skills in PBS. I will request that supervisees, organisations and individuals whom I work with share evidence of restraint reduction alongside increase in quality of life indicators for individuals. I will support others to ensure that people have function-based PBS plans in place which emphasise strategies to improve quality of life.
When Emma first began working with our family we were in a very difficult place. Our son's anxiety was overwhelming and daily life felt impossible. Emma brought with her not only impressive knowledge and extensive experience, but also patience, compassion and optimism. She never let us lose hope and made us see what was possible for our son. Emma is a clear communicator and a supportive advisor who inspires confidence in everyone around her. Through her bespoke PBS plan and the kindness with which she guided and supported us and our son's team, she gave us the tools, confidence, and hope to rebuild. We feel very lucky that Emma came into our lives.
(Parent)
Emma’s depth of knowledge in PBS has been a constant source of inspiration to me. Her extensive experience, creative thinking and ability to lead objective, solution-focused discussions have significantly contributed to my personal and professional development. Through her mentorship, I’ve grown in confidence and capability, enriching my own ability to support and mentor others. Emma truly makes a difference – and empowers others to do the same.
(PBS Practitioner)
Having worked in partnership with Emma across various services, I would highly recommend her insight and resourcefulness. Her knowledge and approach has been highly valued to support and develop teams, and their understanding of behaviours of concern.
(Head of Operations, Supported Living Service)
Emma supported our service with a lady who had complex needs, severe self injury and risks associated with this. She was a great MDT player and we all worked together to explore ways to improve quality of life and then reduce risks and restrictions which was really successful. Emma was very thorough in her approach and provided detailed monthly data to monitor progress which was really helpful.
(Consultant Clinical Psychologist)
Emma was my mentor for an extended time. She has been key in my career development and has always been extremely thorough and thoughtful. She is extremely qualified and knowledgeable in ABA and PBS. Emma is an excellent supervisor and I recommend her to anyone looking to further enhance their skills in the field.
(Behaviour Analyst and PBS Team Manager)
I have worked with Emma for many years and it has always been a pleasure. Emma lives and breathes the values that underpin PBS and has embedded this approach with her supervisees. Emma is collaborative and always works in partnership with services, MDT colleagues and most importantly with clients and their families. Emma is compassionate and brings warmth and kindness to her work, but she is not afraid to challenge when needed. I would highly recommend Emma as a very highly skilled and experienced PBS practitioner - and also a wonderful colleague.
